Should You Allow Your Child to Get A Piercing?

Piercing body parts is a big part of the new cool thing to do. The fact is, kids want to get pierced in some of the weirdest ways. Often times, when kids get a piercing, it is to fit in, to rebel, or simply to show off their body. Girls with nice flat stomachs, may want to get a belly ring to draw attention to their perfectly flat abs. A teenage boy may want to get his tongue pierced to seem more edgy, and be a better kisser. The fact is, kids want to get pierced, and as a parent, you have to decide if you are going to allow it or not. Here are some of the factors to consider:

First, how old is your child, and who is influencing them? Are they old enough to make this decision for themselves? Younger kids are often easily influenced by their friends, and want things because they are the cool thing of the moment, not because they actually want it for part of their life. So, make sure that when you are considering allowing your child get a piercing, that you think about their age, and the influences in their life. If your child is too young, and is too easily influenced by their friends, then do not allow them to get a piercing. A girl whose boyfriend wants her to get a belly ring, or a girl who wants a guy to get their nipples pierced can lead to a piercing becoming so much more, such as a compromise of body.

Next, consider if they are going to be able to care for the pierced area. A piercing requires regular cleaning and care in order to heal properly, and not get infected, or have scabbing, puss, etc. You should never allow a child to get a piercing if they are not going to take the time, or use the proper care to ensure it does not get infected. Do not let your child take the chance of getting life long scars, big infections, or swelling because you allow them to get a piercing that they are not old enough, or mature enough to handle.

Lastly, ask yourself what you believe and what your personal objections are to piercing. Some people think that piercing is a defiling of your body. Some people think that piercing is an act of rebellion. The fact is, if you do not believe in piercing, then do not let your child get one. It can be a difficult thing to deal with, especially if you feel like their asking for a piercing is an act of rebellion against you, or a form of betrayal.

So, should you allow your child to get a piercing? Where do they want to pierce? Why should you allow your child to poke a hole in their body? If there is a good reason, let them, and if your gut is telling you that it is a bad idea, then it probably is.
