Preserving Memories: The Basics of Storing Family Photos

Family photos are full of great memories as they are a visual retelling of your family’s life story. Preserving these family photos is an important part of your family history and heritage. There are a number of options for preserving family photos. Here are a few:

1. Convert a photo into a piece of artwork.

Many companies can turn your printed photo into Glicee artwork. Glicee does not fade and will last for a long time. While it can be expensive, it is a great way to preserve your family photos.

2. Create a scrapbook or album.

Creating a scrapbook or album entails compiling all of your family photos and indicating when they were taken, what was going on, who’s in each photo and where they were taken. This is a fun way to preserve and display family photos. They give more meaning and story to the pictures, and can help keep the individual events and holidays together. The drawbacks to this option are time time, money and space required to create and store albums in your home.

3. Create a photo book.

Photo books are great fun and now, instead of taking the time to cut paper and add embellishments, you can digitally scrapbook your photos. You can create a printed photo book that is professionally printed and bound just like any other book. There are a number of sites that provide downloadable photo book software. For example, you can go to www.MyPublisher.com, and download their bookmaking software. You would then create your own photo book and upload it to their site; they would professionally print and bind it. Shutterfly, Heritage Makers and a number of other online storage and picture sites offer this option; prices vary greatly from site to site.

4. Frame them.

Framing family photos is a good way to preserve them and display them in your home. They are far less likely to be ruined, damaged or misplaced if they are hanging on your walls or sitting on your piano or end table.

5. Use digital preservation.

One of your best options for preserving family photos is by creating digital copies of them in any of several different forms. Having a printed copy is great, but having digital copies on a CD, on a backup driver or on an online storage site can give you peace of mind that, should something awful like a fire or natural disaster happen, you would still have a copy of your precious family portraits somewhere. Digital storage is cheap and requires very little time, effort and space. It is a good way to go, and often compliments the above mentioned options. So, print a copy of your photo and store one digitally.

You can choose one or all of the above options for preserving family photos and making sure your family memories are documented and intact.
