Show your kids the way to a healthy living
According to a recent study, obese parents are likely to raise obese children. This is because you are the most influential person in your kid’s life. If you set a good example like eating healthy, engaging into sports, exercising regularly, and being health conscious, your kids will grow up carrying these habits as well.
If you can’t be an example, use the people he/she idolizes as an example. You may say, “You want to be like Kobe Bryant, right? Do you know that Kobe loves eating fresh fruits and vegetables? And do you know why he can do all those amazing shots? That’s because he plays basketball everyday.” You may also encourage them to be active by letting them dance like Hannah Montana, do a safe wrestling match with them like that in WWE, or just about any activity that involves body movements.
Children have the tendency to imitate someone they idolize. Apart from the dress ups, your kids will even do what their idol does and eat what their idol eats. No wonder celebrities and sports icon are hired to endorse products.
Stress the importance of healthy living
You can do this by explaining the benefits of healthy living as well as the risks of obesity in a level they can understand. For example, compare a healthy and an obese person that you both know. Differentiate with your kid what these two people eat, what activities they do, and the medical conditions they have. Then, let them choose what they want to be, a healthy or an obese. Hopefully they will choose to be healthy and it’s your job to enumerate ways on how they can live a healthy life.
Eat with your kids
Eating with your kids allow you to make sure that they are eating nutritious foods. Not only that, you can secretly calculate the amount of calories they consume daily. Furthermore, you will also have a chance to talk to your kids and get to know them. Opening the doors to your kids and letting them know that you can be their BFF as well, allows them to feel comfortable in sharing if they have problems. Young kids can get stress too, and like adults, they have the tendency to binge eat when they are under stress.
Promote active play
Due to the advent of console games and other video games, young children tend to stay at home, play video games while munching junk foods, and eventually get fat. To avoid this, encourage young kids to be kids by promoting active play. Play is a vital element in a child’s development. It allows them to express how they feel and just be themselves. Aside from that, play also allows the kids’ muscles to work. Furthermore, when the kids play, they burn excess body fat to be converted to energy.
Majority of obese children continue to be obese when they reach adulthood. Thus, teaching the importance of healthy living to children is the best way to keep them fit for the rest of their lives.
