Parenting Kids: Make Shopping Easier With Little Ones

Taking your kids shopping with you can be a real chore. However, there are things you can do to make the trip easier. So, to understand what you can do, let's first look at what makes shopping with children hard:

They want everything.

To eliminate, or at least try to control this problem some you first need to make the child aware that you are not going to respond to requests for items. They have to know it is not ok to ask for everything. They probably still will, but at least you told them not to. It is also a good idea to either plan to get something for them, such as a small toy, or a treat, this way they know that they will be getting something, and they will not feel the need to ask for everything as much. Also, distracting them is a good idea. So, take along something for them to do. A book, a small toy, or a snack is a great way to distract a child from wanting everything the store has to offer.

They get worn out fast.

Unlike some, children may not particularly enjoy shopping, especially if they are not getting anything, and walking around all day for something that does not benefit them is going to make them tired and cranky. So, what you can do to make your shopping easier is make sure you have stroller or backpack to put them in, or a cart. This way when they are tired they have somewhere to rest. Also, you should try and plan your shopping trips with their nap schedule in mind. If they do not have a nap schedule, just make sure they are not already tired or worn out when you leave to go shopping. It is best to go shopping when your child is feeling good, is not hungry, tired, or thirsty.

They don't just stay where you say.

One of the hard parts about shopping with little ones is you can't just say, "Stand there" and expect them to not move, but you need your hands free to be able to pick up items, etc. So, you run into the problem of your child hiding inside clothes racks, running away from you, getting into things, bothering others, etc. To make your shopping easier, and try to avoid such problems, it is always a good idea to take along some form of containment. If you go to the grocery store, strap them into the cart. If you go to a mall or department store, take a long a stroller that lets you strap children in. Not only will they last longer because they can rest, but they will also be unable to get away, hide, etc. leaving your hands free to enjoy shopping rather than keeping hold of your child.

They are kids.

Kids need to be entertained. So, if you want your shopping to be easier, then get them involved. Have your toddler help you pick out the items and place them in the cart, or bag. Ask them what they think about your purchases. Talk to them a lot, and keep them interacting with the activity. Also, keep in mind their needs, such as drinks, food, bathroom breaks. If you address these, they will last a lot longer. When a little one gets hungry they want to eat right away, so take some snacks with you. The same goes for drinks. Packing a juice box is going to take very little space, and can be a huge lifesaver if your child wants a drink and lines are long at the food court.
